SERTOES RACE 2021: Aerial Cinematographer Thomas C. Miller

Rally dos Sertões is one of the most challenging and visually stunning off-road races in the world, spanning thousands of kilometers across Brazil’s diverse landscapes. From vast sand dunes to dense forests and rocky terrain, the race pushes both drivers and production crews to their limits. Capturing the action from the air requires precision, adaptability, and deep experience in aerial cinematography.

Emmy-winning aerial cinematographer Thomas C. Miller brought his expertise to the rally, filming breathtaking aerial sequences that showcase the intensity and scale of the event. Working with the Abdala Brothers production company, he had the creative freedom to experiment with dynamic shots that immersed viewers in the high-speed action. His stunning footage was later turned into an IMAX presentation that aired in São Paulo in 2022.

To make this project a reality, Thomas traveled from San Francisco with 12 cases of specialized camera equipment. Managing international logistics is second nature to him, having worked in 26 countries throughout his career. He personally handled all the ATA Carnet paperwork, ensuring a seamless process for bringing his equipment from the U.S. to Brazil. His experience with international customs allowed him to clear Brazilian customs in less than 20 minutes—an impressive feat that underscores his expertise in global film production logistics.

With over 30 years of experience and more than 5,000 flight hours in aerial cinematography, Thomas C. Miller continues to push the boundaries of visual storytelling. His work on Rally dos Sertões not only captured the raw energy of the race but also highlighted the breathtaking beauty of Brazil’s landscapes, delivering a cinematic experience that transports audiences into the heart of the action.
